It hasn’t even been a week since Dr Derek Shepherd’s final Grey’s Anatomy episode aired in the US, but fans of the medical drama are already campaigning to bring him back. Mad about McDreamy! Grey's Anatomy fans went through another box of tissues in the two-hour episode "She's Leaving Home (Part 2)" following Derek Shepherd's (Patrick Dempsey) death on Thursday, April 30. But it turns out, they weren't just upset about his funeral. Viewers were disappointed in how the ABC medical drama handled the aftermath, which (spoiler!) jumped several months to reveal that Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was pregnant with his child.
Die-hard viewers who've stuck with the series for 11 seasons(!) particularly took issue with Shepherd's funeral that lasted a measly 10 minutes. Meredith was barely around in the first hour, and it went from Easter to Christmas in a matter of 30 minutes. Some were so outraged that they called out creator Shonda Rhimes' writing via Twitter. As for some of the episode's better moments? Grey's fans were moved (aka cried uncontrollably) by everyone's reaction to Derek's tragic death. A cover of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" — a staple in the series — was also used.
Derek Christopher Shepherd, M.D., also referred to as "McDreamy", is a fictional surgeon from the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, portrayed by actor Patrick Dempsey. He made his first appearance during "A Hard Day's Night", which was broadcast on March 27, 2005.
Derek was married to Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). He was happily married to longtime girlfriend Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) until his death. Derek was formerly the Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, but abruptly resigned as chief in the seventh season following the shooting. For his portrayal of Derek, Dempsey was nominated in 2006 and 2007 Golden Globe for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama for the role, and the 2006 SAG Award for the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series award.

Characterization

Shonda Rhimes describes Derek as typical "Prince Charming". He was planned to be a doctor who doesn't really care about anything, who lives in his "own" universe and has a big sex appeal. A man who is charming, devilishly handsome and the type of guy every girl dreams of, and a man that often makes the wrong decisions, and is often known as a jerk or the ultimate heartbreaker. Rhimes planned to have this kind of character from the beginning, because he was the kind of guy whom girls fall in love with and a character whose storylines could easily be changed. USA Today writer Robert Bianco said: "Derek could, at times, seem like two people, warm and funny one minute, cold and self-involved the next. Dempsey's gift was in making those two sides seem like part of the same person, while keeping us rooting for that person as a whole."

Patrick Dempsey fired due to Shonda Rhimes' feud or affair with 'grey's' intern? Why Derek Shepherd's death was a surprise to cast.

Patrick Dempsey's exit from Grey's Anatomy was sudden, even his fellow cast members didn't know what happened in advance. Is this another sign that Shonda Rhimes abruptly fired Dempsey, bringing to Derek Shepherd's death ahead of the Season 11 finale? And did Dempsey's rumored feud with Rhimes really start from scratch his alleged affair by having an intern?

Was Patrick Dempsey fired from Grey's Anatomy by Shonda Rhimes? Whatever happened between your actor who played Derek Shepherd as well as the Grey’s creator came being a surprise on the other actors. James Pickens Jr., one in the few original cast members still around the series, admitted now he had no clue McDreamy would die.

“We didn't know a whole lot. It was kind of around the fly,” Pickens told ABC News immediately. “So whatever information we have, we just about got it kind of right before it happened.”

Derek Shepherd was shockingly wiped out in a car crash ahead of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 finale. While Patrick Dempsey had expressed a desire to eventually leave the show, McDreamy’s death gave the impression to come out of nowhere. Dempsey had even signed a legal contract to appear in Season 12. So many speculated that Shonda Rhimes actually fired Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy.

Even before Derek Shepherd died, reports swirled that Dempsey’s exit was imminent as a consequence of his diva behavior on-set. And Rhimes is recognized for getting rid of troublesome cast members for my child various shows.

There’s even unconfirmed reports that Dempsey was fired for having an affair by having an intern on-set. The original story on his alleged cheating has since been deleted coming from a tabloid website. But several anonymous commenters who come in the know say the rumors are true.

Still, despite Patrick Dempsey's rumored firing, the opposite cast members are showing no ill will towards their former co-star.

“Obviously, Grey’s wouldn’t have been Grey’s without him,” Pickens Jr. added. “He was this kind of integral a part of that. He's a very, very talented guy. His character is becoming iconic. I mean, it's portion of the lexicon of TV.”

Another Grey’s Anatomy star, Sarah Drew, told E! News now that she was happy about Dempsey’s new opportunities. “We're sad to say goodbye to Patrick but we're so happy for him,” she said. “If you follow him on Twitter you will know he's enjoying time together with his kids and he's racing and he's having a ball. So we're so happy for him to advance on.”

Indeed, Patrick Dempsey has got more associated with his racing career now that he's supposedly been fired from Grey's Anatomy. While he may not quit acting permanently, he’s clearly enjoying his new leisure time. So he likely does not have any plans to resume Grey’s soon, particularly when he is feuding with Shonda Rhimes. But only time will state if fans could keep watching the show the coming year without McDreamy.
