Grey’s Anatomy killed off Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd on Thursday night, and one fan launched a petition on Change.org in an effort to bring McDreamy back.

It hasn’t even been a week since Dr Derek Shepherd’s final Grey’s Anatomy episode aired in the US, but fans of the medical drama are already campaigning to bring him back. In one of the show’s most shocking episodes ever, Derek’s wife Meredith was seen taking the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support machine after he was involved in a catastrophic car crash. Viewers were horrified by the turn of events, particularly as Derek, who is known as McDreamy, is one of the show’s most loved characters. Mad about McDreamy! Grey's Anatomy fans went through another box of tissues in the two-hour episode "She's Leaving Home (Part 2)" following Derek Shepherd's (Patrick Dempsey) death on Thursday, April 30. But it turns out, they weren't just upset about his funeral. Viewers were disappointed in how the ABC medical drama handled the aftermath, which (spoiler!) jumped several months to reveal that Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was pregnant with his child.
Die-hard viewers who've stuck with the series for 11 seasons(!) particularly took issue with Shepherd's funeral that lasted a measly 10 minutes. Meredith was barely around in the first hour, and it went from Easter to Christmas in a matter of 30 minutes. Some were so outraged that they called out creator Shonda Rhimes' writing via Twitter. As for some of the episode's better moments? Grey's fans were moved (aka cried uncontrollably) by everyone's reaction to Derek's tragic death. A cover of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" — a staple in the series — was also used.
Derek Christopher Shepherd, M.D., also referred to as "McDreamy", is a fictional surgeon from the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, portrayed by actor Patrick Dempsey. He made his first appearance during "A Hard Day's Night", which was broadcast on March 27, 2005.
Derek was married to Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). He was happily married to longtime girlfriend Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) until his death. Derek was formerly the Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, but abruptly resigned as chief in the seventh season following the shooting. For his portrayal of Derek, Dempsey was nominated in 2006 and 2007 Golden Globe for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama for the role, and the 2006 SAG Award for the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series award.
Characterization
Shonda Rhimes describes Derek as typical "Prince Charming". He was planned to be a doctor who doesn't really care about anything, who lives in his "own" universe and has a big sex appeal. A man who is charming, devilishly handsome and the type of guy every girl dreams of, and a man that often makes the wrong decisions, and is often known as a jerk or the ultimate heartbreaker. Rhimes planned to have this kind of character from the beginning, because he was the kind of guy whom girls fall in love with and a character whose storylines could easily be changed. USA Today writer Robert Bianco said: "Derek could, at times, seem like two people, warm and funny one minute, cold and self-involved the next. Dempsey's gift was in making those two sides seem like part of the same person, while keeping us rooting for that person as a whole."
