Patrick Dempsey's exit from Grey's Anatomy was sudden, even his fellow cast members didn't know what happened in advance. Was Patrick Dempsey fired from Grey's Anatomy by Shonda Rhimes? Whatever happened between your actor who played Derek Shepherd as well as the Grey’s creator came being a surprise on the other actors. There’s even unconfirmed reports that Dempsey was fired for having an affair by having an intern on-set. The original story on his alleged cheating has since been deleted coming from a tabloid website. But several anonymous commenters who come in the know say the rumors are true.
Still, despite Patrick Dempsey's rumored firing, the opposite cast members are showing no ill will towards their former co-star.
“Obviously, Grey’s wouldn’t have been Grey’s without him,” Pickens Jr. added. “He was this kind of integral a part of that. He's a very, very talented guy. His character is becoming iconic. I mean, it's portion of the lexicon of TV.”
Another Grey’s Anatomy star, Sarah Drew, told E! News now that she was happy about Dempsey’s new opportunities. “We're sad to say goodbye to Patrick but we're so happy for him,” she said. “If you follow him on Twitter you will know he's enjoying time together with his kids and he's racing and he's having a ball. So we're so happy for him to advance on.”

Indeed, Patrick Dempsey has got more associated with his racing career now that he's supposedly been fired from Grey's Anatomy. While he may not quit acting permanently, he’s clearly enjoying his new leisure time. So he likely does not have any plans to resume Grey’s soon, particularly when he is feuding with Shonda Rhimes. But only time will state if fans could keep watching the show the coming year without McDreamy.

Mad about McDreamy! Grey's Anatomy fans underwent another box of tissues inside two-hour episode "She's Leaving Home (Part 2)" following Derek Shepherd's (Patrick Dempsey) death on Thursday, April 30. But it ends up, they weren't just upset about his funeral. Viewers were disappointed in how a ABC medical drama handled the aftermath, which (spoiler!) jumped almost a year to reveal that Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was pregnant with his child.
Die-hard viewers who've bound to the series for 11 seasons(!) particularly took issue with Shepherd's funeral that lasted a measly 10 minutes. Meredith was barely around in the first hour, plus it went from Easter to Christmas in a matter of 30 minutes. Some were so outraged they called out creator Shonda Rhimes' writing via Twitter.
As for some of the episode's better moments? Grey's fans were moved (aka cried uncontrollably) by everyone's a reaction to Derek's tragic death. A cover of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" — a staple inside the series — seemed to be used.
Derek Christopher Shepherd, M.D., also called "McDreamy", is a fictional surgeon in the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, portrayed by actor Patrick Dempsey. He made his first appearance during "A Hard Day's Night", which has been broadcast on March 27, 2005.
Derek was married to Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). He was happily married to longtime girlfriend Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) until his death. Derek was formerly the Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, but abruptly resigned as chief inside the seventh season following the shooting.
