Terence "Terry" Chi-Shen Tao (born 17 July 1975, Adelaide) is an Australian-born Chinese American mathematician working in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, additive combinatorics, ergodic Ramsey theory, random matrix theory, and analytic number theory who rose to fame as a well-known child prodigy.
Born to parents who immigrated to Australia from Hong-Kong, Tao specializes in the study of harmonic analysis, additive combinatorics, and other fields of mathematics.
He currently holds the James and Carol Collins chair in mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Tao was a co-recipient of the 2006 Fields Medal, an award that celebrates excellence and innovation in mathematics to recipients under 40 years old, and the 2014 Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics.
He teaches at the University of California in Los Angeles.
